Support the Campaign for Justice in Retail Cleaning

Centro Campesino stands in solidarity with CTUL members in their struggle to achieve fair pay, dignified working conditions, and justice in their places of employment through the Campaign for Justice in Retail Cleaning. As allies to this worker-led campaign, we are frustrated with the fact that large retail chains such as SuperValu (including Cub Foods and Jerry’s Foods), Target, Lunds & Byerly’s, among others, have failed to partner with workers to establish a code of conduct ensuring fair wages and working conditions.

Over twenty members and supporters attended the demonstration today against Bushel Boy Farms and EMPO Corporation despite the subzero temperatures of today. We have not heard a response from any of the companies. On December 21, 2010, Mrs. Casanova was rushed to the emergency room due to an ailment and was ordered by her doctor to take a two day medical leave from work. Unfortunately, on December 23, 2010, Bushel Boy and EMPO refused to accept Mrs. Casanova medical excused and decided to terminate her employment. EMPO and Bushel Boy do not provide their employees with the entire hand book in the language Latino workers can understand. Instead, EMPO provided a one page attendance policy in Spanish, but it contradicts the English version.

This new PSA from NCLR was produced in response the Arizona's SB 1070, which makes Latinos suspect in their own communities and potential victims of racial profiling. To join NCLR's Boycott Intolerance campaign against SB 1070, text BOYCOTT or BOICOT for messages in Spanish to 62571.
