Dear Mayor Quast,
I am aware and informed of the situation that Latino members of your community
are currently facing in Gaylord. Many Latino members of your community are
facing a long trend of harassment and abuse by one of your police officers and
to this date you seemed to have ignored their voices and the facts. I am deeply
disappointed to hear that this situation has not been resolved and that you have
not taken the proper steps to hear citizens’ complaints and put an end to this
trend of abuse.
I urge you to take immediate action and put an end to this trend of abuse and
harassment! I believe is your responsibility as the Mayor of this beautiful
small town in rural Minnesota, to insure that Gaylord becomes a welcoming, safe,
and vibrant community for all residents. I am sure that you don’t want to
portray your town as unwelcoming and unwilling to attend to residents’
complaints and needs. I support Latino members of this community represented by
Centro Campesino, and I urge you to sit with them to establish a good faith
relationship that would end this issue. More specifically:
• Put an end to discrimination and profiling practices by the police
• Immediately suspend and remove Officer Eric Boon from the force.
• Establish an anti-discrimination and profiling policy in your city
• Establish an anti-discrimination and profiling training for all city
officials
• Establish a space for Latino members of the community to voice their
opinions and express their issues
• Establish an atmosphere of mutual respect and cooperation with Latino
community members.
• Provide city sponsored cultural exchanges and events to promote the
cultural diversity of the town.
I will support all public and legal actions taken by Centro Campesino and
Latino members of the Gaylord community. Nonetheless, I look forward to seeing
you taking positive action and attending to the demands of these hardworking
members of your community.
